This week's Chart of Note illustrates the record breaking exports of U.S. distiller's dried grains with solubles (DDGS) to the Middle East and North Africa in the 2015/2016 marketing year.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA's) latest trade data report, the United States exported more than 1.14 million metric tons of DDGS to these countries last marketing year, a new high.
The region includes the countries of Algeria, Bahrain, Cyprus, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
In Turkey, exports doubled from 344,000 to 695,000 metric tons. Exports of DDGS increased by 96 percent to Israel, from 103,000 to 202,000 metric tons. Morocco imported 42 percent more DDGS, from 100,000 to 143,000 metric tons. In Tunisia, exports increased from 4,700 to 14,000 metric tons.
Globally, 49 countries imported U.S. DDGS in the 2015/2016 marketing year, USDA data show, a testament to the quality of the product and U.S. Grains Council's market development and trade servicing efforts. DDGS sales will be a focus of the coming Export Exchange conference late this month in Detroit, Michigan, which more than 200 international grain buyers are scheduled to attend.
